Ephemeral First Flows…One Rock Dams at Higgins Creek Canyon

It was an earlier than usual monsoon season for northern New Mexico in the summer of 2021.  One Rock Dams (one rock HIGH dams) that were built throughout Higgins Creek Canyon at Fort Union Ranch with Albuquerque Wildlife Federation volunteers in May and June had already captured a good amount of sediment from a couple of flow events by the time the end of July had rolled around.

Vegetation was showing response, debris indicated water flow and spread, the structures looked handsomely set in the landscape and Zeedyk was enthusiastic about the potential meandering benefits to come.
